Museum of the Homeland War

Karlovac

Museum of Homeland War – Turanj is a historical museum that bears witness to the creation of the modern Republic of Croatia and the struggle for independence during the Homeland War in the Karlovac area. The museum is located at the historic site of Križanić – Turanj, which has been listed as a cultural heritage site of the Republic of Croatia since 2013.

Since the construction of the wooden watchtower in 1582, which, with a military garrison of frontier soldiers, guarded the southern approaches to the Karlovac fortress from Ottoman invaders, Turanj has served as an outpost, the last line of defense of the city of Karlovac. During the Homeland War from 1991 to 1995, Turanj was a strategically important point in the defense of the city, where the attempt to capture the city and cut off Croatia was halted.

Today, Turanj stands as a symbol of victory, a testament to the fight for a free and independent Croatia, and a permanent memorial to the heroes of the Croatian Army who defended Karlovac and Croatia at Turanj.

The items in the collection of the Department of Contemporary History from the creation of the Republic of Croatia in 1990 are presented within the historical context from which they originated, emphasizing their historical and social significance. The modern, ambient, and interactive exhibition design, featuring more than 400 original museum objects and nearly four hours of multimedia content, has created an atmosphere of impressive ambiance.

Museum Opening Hours:
TUE - FRI: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM
SAT/SUN: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Closed on Mondays and public holidays
