Old Town Ogulin

Ogulin

The Old Town of Ogulin, also known as Ogulin Castle, proudly stands as a symbol of the city’s history and tradition. This significant fortress was built at the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era when Bernardin Frankopan, after the destruction of Modruš, decided to establish new fortifications to protect the military garrison and local population.

The construction of Ogulin Castle began in the late 15th century, serving both defensive and residential purposes. The Palas, the most important building within the complex, was enclosed within high walls and flanked by semi-circular towers. On the eastern side, there is a small chapel dedicated to St. Bernardine, while the entrance was secured by a drawbridge over a moat, connecting the chasms of Đulin ponor and Medvednica. By 1555, the town came under royal military administration, becoming a key stronghold of the Military Frontier. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous modifications, with the last major renovation taking place in 1820, when a spacious veranda with a grand staircase was added.

Today, the Old Town of Ogulin preserves a wealth of history within the Ogulin Heritage Museum, while part of the castle has been converted into a museum café—an ideal place to relax and reflect on the past of this historical treasure.

The museum’s permanent exhibition showcases historical events, notable figures, and the cultural and natural heritage of the Ogulin region through various collections, including:

  • Collection of Stone Monuments
  • Homeland War Collection & Memorial Room for Fallen, Deceased, and Missing Soldiers
  • Ethnographic Collection
  • Civic Collection
  • Memorial Room of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić
  • Alpinism Collection
  • Archaeological Collection
  • Cell No. 6
  • Art Collection

Additionally, the museum preserves artifacts related to traditional crafts, numerous technical objects, old photographs, and a collection of postcards and greeting cards.
