Sport hunting

The vast forested areas are an invaluable treasure of Karlovac County. In the shade of ancient trees, on the slopes of the mountains and along the intermountain plateaus, you can truly relax while walking, and from spring to autumn, you can also gather mushrooms, chestnuts, and other forest fruits. The mountains are home to a variety of wildlife, with large game being particularly prominent. The forests and hunting grounds are managed by Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests) and local hunting societies, most of which are named after the animals native to their regions.

Their task is also to care for the animals, particularly the endangered species, and to protect the natural habitats in which they live. Thanks to this ecological approach, Karlovac County is still home to some of Europe's rarest animals, such as the wolf, lynx, and brown bear, all of which are tied to local legends and hunting tales. These proud rulers of the mountainous empire are also a symbol of the growing eco-tourism industry; in the preserved habitats of primordial beauty and harmony, more and more people seek inner peace and satisfaction.

The brown bear, wolf, and lynx live in the southwestern regions of the county, in the area of Mala and Velika Kapela, and are among the key contributors to maintaining the area's biodiversity. The hunting of these animals is strictly regulated and is aimed at preserving a stable population size that ensures their survival and coexistence with humans. Both the wolf and lynx are protected species. The county is also rich in other game, including foxes, deer, hares, wild boars, ducks, quails, pheasants, partridges, and pigeons.

In the awareness of new generations, photo hunting has become increasingly popular, where instead of guns, cameras and photographic equipment are used. Karlovac County was the first in Croatia to introduce photo safaris into its tourist offer; at the hunting grounds Crni and Debeli vrh on the Kapela mountain range or on the fallow deer farm near Krnjak, you can photograph and film various types of wildlife, either individually or in groups. By patiently waiting for the animal to wander into view of the camera, not only will you capture a great shot, but you'll also be rewarded with an unforgettable experience of observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
