The oldest evidence of human presence in what is now Karlovac dates back to 3500 BC. The construction of the Karlovac fortress began on July 13, 1579, and each year the city celebrates its birthday on that date. Built in the shape of a six-pointed star, it exemplifies the ideal Renaissance city. For three centuries, it was a military town, later gaining the status of a Free Royal City. At the beginning of the 19th century, Karlovac was the wealthiest city in Croatia, thanks to its craftsmanship and trade.

Wherever you go on a journey through Croatia, Karlovac is a place you must pass through. Sometimes hidden from view by autumn mists, be curious and discover what it holds.
