Rakovica

Step into the gateway to Plitvice Lakes and discover natural adventures.

Rakovica is a place on the border of Lika and Kordun, serving as the gateway to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Tourism here has a long history, dating back to the discovery of the Barać Caves. The hospitality of the hosts has been passed down from the tumultuous times of the 19th century when the inhabitants of Rakovica were friendly towards the Hungarian army stationed near the Barać Caves. Legend has it that the name Rakovica derives from the Hungarian word for "friend."

Speleological tourism is the greatest asset of Rakovica, along with the tourist-managed Barać Caves and a recent project to build a Cave House. The surrounding area is rich with cave systems and pits. If you choose a speleological adventure, venture into the silence of Croatia’s underground karst and discover the magnificent stalactites and underground channels created by Mother Nature. If you simply want a brief escape into the dark, visit the Barać Caves, where you can cool off in the summer at a constant temperature of 9°C and find out who lived here before us. You’ll have a close encounter with a rhinoceros, cave bear, lion, and hyena through the paleontological findings of bones in the cave.

If you’re looking for more adrenaline and want to experience the magic of flight, head to the Plitvice Adventure Park and see the world from a bird’s-eye view while the Korana River flows through the rocky canyon beneath your feet. Or do you want to ride through nature on an ATV Quad? Perhaps paintball with a team of fearless warriors? Want to try military drills at a training ground? Ride horses through forests and over meadows? Cycle or simply enjoy walking or hiking? Delight in nature while savoring a gastronomic experience with tastings of local cheeses, sausages, and homemade rakija? Are you drawn to archery or climbing? Do you want to greet Eugen Kvaternik? Or perhaps you just want to sit peacefully in the shade of St. Helena’s church? If you answered yes to any of these questions, Rakovica is here to fulfill all your wishes.

And don’t forget to visit the old town of Drežnik as the day comes to a close, where the spirits of the past still reign. If you meet any, greet them kindly. They are good spirits, safeguarding the history and future of Rakovica.
