The small hillside village of Saborsko is one of the longest settlements in Croatia. A quarter of the village is located within Plitvice Lakes National Park, and the surrounding area is covered in dense forest, with the unique primeval forest of Čorkova Uvala. Whether you choose to cycle or walk, enjoy the views of meadows, streams, and an unusual lake that sometimes exists and sometimes does not. If you visit in autumn, the lake will be there, but in summer, you’ll wander through the meadow and wonder where the waters of Lake Blaćansko have gone.

Throughout history, Saborsko was first mentioned 500 years ago in the Modruš Urban Code, under the name Zaborsko. From then until today, the timeline of Saborsko's inhabitants has been quite distinctive. The village’s interesting history can still be sensed today by visiting the old churches or simply taking a walk to a nearby hill, which offers imaginative visitors a seemingly endless array of images depicting the challenging and fascinating struggle for survival in this area. Today’s chroniclers of Saborsko have noted: “In Saborsko, everything is the same as it was yesterday; not a single hill has moved, nor has any tree walked…” The tranquility and bliss of this small village provide a healing escape from the fast-paced reality of today’s world.

Therefore, embark on a meditative walk in Čorkova Uvala, a primeval forest of century-old beech and fir trees located within Plitvice Lakes National Park. Discover the rich plant and animal life of the mountain meadows, and enjoy the sound of bubbling streams and springs. A special experience you must not miss is Blaćansko Lake, or Lake Begovac – Blata, one of the rare estavelles in the world. This lake forms and disappears depending on the dry or wet season. An estavelle is a specific karst formation that features spring characteristics during high water levels but becomes a sinkhole during low levels. Thus, the waters of this lake flow in two directions: they submerge in summer and rise to the surface in autumn. There are only a few dozen such lakes in the world, so don’t miss the chance to see this karst jewel of Saborsko.

The nature of Saborsko is appealing year-round to all photographers, hikers, cyclists, anglers, hunters, snow enthusiasts, or simply those who love nature. And if you enjoy gastronomic delicacies, set off along the Green Road for a tasting of local products for a true delight in nature’s bounty.
